We have been learning about our cultural heritages in class. We interviewed our families to find out where our ancestors are from and different things that represent our culture. We created a Google map to mark where all our classmates' heritages are. We researched all the different countries to find out more about them and what makes them special. Then we figured out what groups we would work in and planned how we could make a float to represent our cultural heritage. Then we brought boxes and wagons to school. We designed floats and put them together. On Friday, we had a Cultural Heritage parade! We invited the whole school and our families to come watch. We marched in ABC order by continent. We started with Africa, then Asia, Europe and finally North America.

At the beginning of the year, our class shared our special things that we like in our life bags. We took turns sharing our things. There were a lot of cool things like toys, fragile things, and pictures. We took two days to share everything.
Questions: Did you ever share anything that you like with your friends? Do you have something special to you? In our class, we are learning about maps. So far we've learned about the compass rose, map keys, and symbols. We made maps of our class. We worked in groups. All of us have already completed our maps. We had a lot of fun. The supplies we needed were: scissors, colored paper, white paper, crayons, markers, pencils, construction paper and a really BIG piece of posterboard. When we were done, we got our picture taken. Each group got a checklist. Every map was hung up on the windows for everyone to see and admire. It was a great lesson. I hope we do it again. Have you ever made a map? What was the map? When would you want to use a map? Last week we harvested all our vegetables from our school garden! The Second Graders grew corn, lima beans, carrots, tomatoes, and onions. Other classes had different vegetables including lettuce, peppers, beans, zucchini and flowers. We used these vegetables to make soup and salad for a special Soup and Salad night at school! We raised money at the Soup and Salad night to give to students in Sierra Leone, Africa to buy new computers for their school. We raised $1,900, which is enough to buy 8 computers for their school! We felt good about doing this because we know we are helping them. We also planted lettuce and radishes this week, to grow for a Farmer's Market in the fall. We can raise more money for the students in Sierra Leone then! Questions for our Readers: (Remember, first names only and no personal information like your last name, address, phone number, or future plans!)
Do you like vegetables? Which one is your favorite? Have you ever helped someone, and how did you feel doing it? Have you ever raised money in a fundraiser? What did you do to raise money? Today is our first week of Second Grade! We are Second Graders in Ms. Young’s class. Our class is in a very small school in Ohio. There are 18 students in our class. In our class, there are 10 girls and 8 boys. Most of us are 7 or 8 years old. One person in our class is a twin! One person is an only child, 10 people have one sibling, 5 have two siblings, and 2 people have 3 siblings! We like to play sports, sing and listen to music, and reading! Some sports we play are karate, soccer, gymnastics, basketball, football, boxing, wrestling, lacrosse, taekwondo, ice skating, cheerleading, and baseball. We are excited to share what we are learning through our blog and cannot wait to read your comments!
What do you like to do? Do you play sports or an instrument? How many siblings do you have? **Please remember that when making a comment, do not include any personal information, such as your last name, address, phone number, password or your plans. This week we had the exciting opportunity to Skype with a class in Hurricane, Utah! We've been talking about urban, suburban and rural communities for the past couple weeks, and this was our chance to talk to a class in a rural community to find out what life was like there. We joined Mrs. Lance's class to ask and answer questions with Mr. Z's class. We each had different jobs: inquirers, answerers, typists, map holders, photographers, greeters and closers. We compared our communities and schools and realized that we have many similarities as well as differences! It was a great experience, and we cannot wait to Skype again! Check out the video below to see just a little of our Skype call. Also, we had two typists that did an awesome job keeping track of all the information we learned. You can see a little of the chart below the video!
What was the most surprising similarity we had with Mr. Z's class? What was the most surprising difference we had with Mr. Z's class? We've been learning about healthy habits for the past few weeks, and we created commercials to teach others why these healthy habits are important! Check out our Second Grade acting debuts! The video below is our first two groups. There are two other blog posts with the other groups' videos. All these commercials were completely planned and written and executed by the students! Don't forget to leave us comments!
What healthy habit do you practice the best? What is one healthy habit you could improve in your own life? Check out our Slideshow of our landform projects! You can see the models we created and read about each landform. The designs we added to the powerpoint are not showing up, but at least you can see the important parts of the project! Be sure to leave a comment answering our questions below! 1. What are landforms? Do you know how they are formed? 2. What is your favorite landform and why? 3. Can you think of other landforms that are not included in our project? We did a little data analysis about our blog visitors up to this point! Can you believe that we've had 1,201 different visitors to our blog? Those visitors are from 15 different countries and 37 states in the United States--even Hawaii! Check out the pie chart below to see the different countries where our visitors live. We made a list of all the states we have not had visitors from yet. If you know of anyone who lives in these states, we would love for you to pass our blog on! We think it would be really cool to have blog readers from all 50 states. :) Here are the 13 states we still need:
Alaska Arkansas Delaware Idaho Mississippi Montana New Hampshire New Mexico North Dakota South Dakota Vermont West Virginia Wyoming How many visitors do you predict we will have by the end of the school year? What is something special about the state or country you live in? We made quilts in our classroom to share what is special and important about our families! We included favorite family traditions, memories with relatives, meals, and how we are unique. We had a lot of fun making these quilts, but it was even more fun to have conversations sharing about each of our squares as we made them! We love our families! What are some fun family traditions your family does? (It does not have to be related to a holiday!) |
